More information : [SP 6206 8947] Ancient Earthworks [TI] (1) On high ground, north-east of Knaptoft House, are fragments of early entrenchments which have been broken for the arrangements of Medieval life. [The author makes a series of somewhat confused references to earthworks, described by Nichols, under Knaptoft- see SP 68 NW 16 apparently identifying them with this OS published site and as underlying the fish-ponds and DMV of Knaptoft - SP 68 NW 6 and 17. The plans published in Nichols and the topographical description therein, indicate, however, that the Nichols' earthworks are not in the immediate vicinity of Knaptoft. (2) Oblique air-photographs of the field containing the OS published site showing a series of crop/soil markings indicating old enclosures. (3) At the time of field investigation, the field was being cleared of a potato crop. The 'earthworks' are a series of banks and ditches now reduced by ploughing. A number of enclosures formed by these banks and ditches are not shown by the OS and some are not visible on the APs. The features are of relatively weak profile and formed the boundaries of small fields probably destroyed at the time of the enclosure. No evidence of 'early entrenchments' was seen and the surviving remnants are of little or no archaeological significance. (4) No change. (5)
