Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 341985

Hob Uid: 341985
Location :
Northamptonshire
Daventry
West Haddon
Grid Ref : SP6415071450
Summary : Alleged site of a Roman tumulus at Ostor Hill. There are no surface indications.
More information : (SP 6415 7145) Ostor Hill Site of Tumulus (LB) (1)

"Ostor Hill" was supposed by Bridges (2) to be the tumulus of
Publius Ostorius. The ONB is destroyed and no evidence can be
found that there was ever, in fact, a tumulus. Bridges (and
his informants) may have been influenced simply by the place
name, although, according to the English Place Names Society
it is probably of Scandinavian origin - "austr" meaning "east".
There is no tumulus shown in this area on OS 1st editions. (2-3)

There are no surface indications of a barrow either on the hill or
in the immediate vicinity. (4)
