Summary : The parish church is built in on what is thought to be a motte. A castle at this site was first mentioned in documentary sources in 1154-64 and was possibly demolished 1208-1215, although a Constable of Buckingham is documented in 1280. Levelled in 1777 for the churchyard whichnow occupies it. In 1877 excavations at the back of the Wesleyan chapel exposed foundations probably associated with the castle. |

The Church of St Peter and St Paul, built 1771-81 on motte of former castle. (2)
Said to have been the alleged prison of Hereward c 1070 (3a) and mentioned in 1216(3b). A strong castle had stood on a high hill in Buckingham (4c) and a Constable of Buckingham Castle is mentioned as living in 1280. (This date has been altered to 1291 by manuscript) (5). A view that traditionally a castle stood here is supported by a number of 'castle' names in the vicinity. In 1877 excavations at the back of the Wesleyan Chapel exposed stonework which was considered part of the castle (a) (b) (3-5)
St Peter and St Paul's church occupies a large flat-topped eminence which stands up to 8.0 m above the surrounding ground level, and is popularly known as the site of a castle. (6)
Listed by Cathcart King. (7)
Between 1154-64 the castle at Buckingham is recorded as in the possession of the Earl of Buckingham, and was probably abandoned 1208-15. (8) |
