A plain rectangular moat enclosing the site of a now destroyed castle (2). A moated homestead. (2-3)
Earthworks in very good condition although not more than 1.0m- 2.0m high. In addition to the published earthworks there are features to the west. There is a local tradition that the site was excavated "around c 1900".
Along the south-east side are clear traces of buildings, probably a hall complex; and at the angles and north-east side abe further building traces. (4)
A homestead moat in excellent condition as described by Auth 4. Published survey 25" correct.
Surface disturbances to the west of the earthwork are slight, non-surveyable, and cannot be classified. (5)

The site of the Audleys' medieval castle lies south-east of the church in a meadow called Court Close. The castle was mentioned in 1263 when James Audley was granted oak for its repair. (b) It is enclosed by a rectangular moat and may be on the site of a Romano-British enclosure.(c) The angles of the castle's foundations were excavated c.1870.(d) (7)
SP 609259: Stratton Audley castle has a rectangular moat, still wet in part. Its masonry has been destroyed but earthworks of average strength remain. (8) |
