Notitia Monastica places the Austin Cell of "Holywell upon Watling Street" and describes it as a cell/chantry of Black Canons belonging to the Abbey of Rowcester in Staffordshire (2).
Founded 1240-1270. Dissolved 1325 (3)
Holywell Priory is another name for Caves Inn on Watling Street... The name seems to have been retained for a field and later house on the site, but no trace of the cell or chapel has been discovered. (4)
Caves Inn (the name derived from the former owners of a public house here) is now named Coton Farm and is modern. No trace of a Md. building is evident or is known to have been found although the Priory legend is well established locally. Finds from the general area have been mainly Roman but have included a morse (an ecclesiastical cape fastening) (SP 57 NW ) (5) |
