More information : [Centred SP 56117747] CASTLE [GT] (site of) (1)
Lilbourne Castle. A Motte and Bailey Castle on marshy ground on the left bank of the Avon, consisting of a mound with a bailey SSE, and another smaller enclosure to the NE. The scale of the earthwork is small and the mound has no level space at the top; but the ditch and rampart were formidable. (2)
Lilbourne - Motte and Bailey Castle. Scheduled Monument. (3)
Good account with some historical background, and plan (q.v.). No documentary mention - probably adulterine. (4)
Earthwork as descibed above, and in good condition. Surveyed at 1/2500 (5)
RCHM suggests that conical motte may be the earliest feature, with the SE enclosure and banks, which overlook the motte as later additions. To the E of the N bailey is a large rectangular depression, probably a fishond, SE of the motte is a low (2m) small mound which may overlie the surrounding ridge and furrow. Purpose unknown several hollow-ways approach the castle though their relationship to it is unclear. [RCHM plan]. (6)
