Summary : Trinity College was founded in 1554-5 by Sir Thomas Pope and his wife Elizabeth on the site of Durham College which was founded c1286 and dissolved in 1540. The college stands on the north side of Broad Street, immediately to the east of Balliol College. It is constructed local Oxfordshirestone and dressings, with slate roofs which are also lead covered. |
More information : (SP 51360656) Trinity College (Founded 1555) formerly Durham College (Founded about 1290). (NAT) (1) Durham College was founded about 1286 for Benedictine monks of Durham and ranked as a cell of that monastery. It was dissolved in 1540. Trinity College was founded in 1554-5 by Sir Thomas Pope and his wife Elizabeth. It stands on the north side of Broad Street, immediately to the east of Balliol College. The walls are of local Oxfordshire stone with dressings of same material and the roofs are slate and lead covered. With the exclusion of the 16th century, building and alterations have extended from the 14th to 20th centuries. Grade I. (2-5)
