More information : Over Worton church occupies the remains of a circular platform on the spine of a steep ridge. Contiguous to it to the NW is a circular mound 17.0m. in diameter and 2.0m high. The mound is overgrown but there is sufficient evidence to say that it was ditched. The site (centred at SP 43012924) is a commanding one and it is tempting to speculate that the mound, though rather small, is a motte, and that the platform supporting the church, its bailey. Resurveyed at 1:2500. (1)
"Over Worton. On the hill on which the church stands and just outside the north wall of the churchyard is a mound 198ft. circumference and 9ft. high, planted, and having the characteristics of the other round barrows of this district. A report in the parish says that it covers a heap of rubbish piled there at the restoration of the church in 1844, but the present rector tells me that an old inhabitant says that he remembers the mound there before the restoration."
