More information : (SP 3353 8925) Arbury (G.T.). (1)
Arbury House, which is on the site of an Augustinian Priory of canons, with its surrounding property, was granted at the suppression to Charles Brandon. It eventually came into the possession of Sir Edmund Anderson, who pulled down the church and conventual buildings and partly out of the old material erected "a very fair structure". In 1586 the house, not long completed, came into the possession of John Newdigate. Early in the last century the fine old Elizabethan house was altered according to the fashion of the day into a pseudo-Gothic one. (2)
The Austin priory of Arbury (Erbury or Ordbury) was founded early in the reign of Henry II by Ralph de Sudley. Supressed c.1536, and granted to Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk. Dedicated in honour of the Blessed Virgin. (3)
"Arbury" is a large Elizabethan mansion. No surface remains of the priory can now be seen. (4)
