More information : (SP 32937235) Motslow Hill (GT). (1)
The tenants of Stoneleigh, called Sokemen, were compelled every three weeks to dox their suit at the Kings Court held for the manor, upon a place called Motslow Hill, on the south side of the river, opposite the church. (2)
Motslow Hill mentioned 1260 and later may have been used as the Hundred meeting. There is an artificial mound here 300 yds SSW of the church. (3)
The earthworks at SP 32937235 to which the OS 25" "Motslow Hill" is applied are results of quarrying. Motslow Hill in fact is on area centred at SP 330723 and a mound there at SP 33077235 is more likely to be the hundred moot. Surveyed at 1/2500. (4)
Cathcart King suggests that it is not incompatible for this to have been a motte as well as a moot-hill. (5) |
