More information : (SP 330418) COMPTON HOUSE (GT) MOAT (GT). (1)

Compton House was erected by Sir William Compton c.1520 allegedly on the site of an earlier Tudor building, but this is not evident in the fabrics or from documentary records. Leland states that he brought some of the material from Fulbrook Castle, 12 miles distant, but this was apparently hearsay and although some features of Compton House may be of re-used material nothing is definite.

A moat originally enclosed the house but this was partly filled in the 19th c. The west arm was close to the house and was crossed by a bridge.

In the 19th c. the house was neglected and practically deserted, but in 1867 it was reconditioned and resumed its role as the seat of the Marquesses of Northampton, the present owner being
the seventh Marquess. (2)

The house is in excellent condition and is opened to the public on certain weekdays. Published survey (25") of moat revised. See attached Brochure. (3)

Compton House, classed Grade 1. (4)
