Summary : A probably Iron Age multivallate hillfort covering an area of about five acres. The defences consist of double ramparts and ditch, with traces of a third outer bank visible both on the ground and on aerial photographs. The inner rampart is in good condition, whilst the outer rampart is largely ploughed out. A stone revetment has been revealed by digging. Excavations and finds at Tadmarton Camp have revealed Late Iron Age/Roman finds and some structural features. The squarish platform originally recorded as part of this record is discussed separately as NMR monument number 1564557. A series of probably medieval or post-medieval hollow ways or possibly an Iron Age boundary bank and field system appear to lead into the hill fort, and have been discussed in (NMR monument number 1564659). This site has been mapped from aerial photographs as part of the South East Warwickshire and Cotswolds HLS Target Areas National Mapping Programme. |
More information : (SP 388 356) CAMP (NR) (1) A roughly circular bivallate plateau-fort of about 5 acres. The larger part is included in a golf course best preserved on the other side of the road where the inner bank rises to a maximum of 4ft. above the interior. Casual digging has revealed a stone revetment. The second ditch is clear but not prominent and at the north there is possibly a third bank. There is an incurved entrance on the eastern side. The outer bank is no more than 2ft. high with a steeper outer face suggesting a stone revetment. Compares in size and situation with Rainsborough (SP 53 SW 11) A few yards to the SE is an apparently raised platform of about half an acre, with the remains of an enclosing ditch. Whether it has any relationship to the hill-fort is uncertain. This IA fort is as described by Sutton though his outer and possibly third bank on the north is slight and unsurveyable and could be an old ploughing headland. This part of the fort is on arable and the ramparts are being smoothed and spread. The southern half, which now forms part of Tadmarton Golf course has suffered minor mutilation but is generally in good condition. (2) The squarish ditched earthwork centred at SP 38943553 (mentioned above to the south east) is a platform of sandy soil raised about 0.6 metres, edged with remnants of a spread bank, 0.4 metres high. There is no trace of an entrance. It is doubtful if this feature is an antiquity and its purpose is not clear. Possibly an early 19th century military work. (3) Resurveyed at 1:2500. (4)

A probably Iron Age multivallate hillfort is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs. The site is centred on SP 38802 35667 and extends over a roughly circular area which measures roughly 205 metres across. The outer earthworks on the northern side are very plough levelled and slight, though there does seem to be evidence for a third outer bank on the aerial photographs taken in 1954 and 1970.
There are several golf course greens impacting on the ramparts on the southern and eastern sides. They have cut or relocated the inner rampart at several locations. At around SP 38861 35569 ridge and furrow can be seen overlying the outer rampart. The squarish platform originally recorded as part of this record is discussed separately as (Monument Number: 1564557) (9-10).
