Summary : Earthwork remains of a Roman temporary camp. It is best preserved on the north-eastern and north-western sides. It has an enclosed area of 60m by 90m, which is half the size of its neighbour. The rampart measures 3.8m across and 0.4m high. The surrounding ditch is 5m across and 0.4m deep. Scheduled. |
More information : SP 3513 1881. The remains of an earthwork seen by Crawford, "rectangular with narrow width in proportion to its length; has been partially obliterated by cultivation". (Not visible on air photos RAF 1947 and 1961). (1)
This work has been greatly disturbed by cultivation but, where visible, appears to be the perimeter feature of a large tree planted area and is doubtless contemporary with the early cultivation of Cornbury Park. (2)
A pair of Roman camps and a section of post-Medieval sunken road situated in the north-eastern corner of Cornbury Park. (3) |
