More information : (Centred SP 38131658) Roman Villa (GS) (site of) (1)
(SP 37911632) "Villa said to be nearby." (2)
(SP 37961663) Cropmarks etc from Allen's air photos. (3)
Cropmarks look like part of villa enclosure. Probable site of villa at approximately SP 38001660. Radford and Harden have observed on the ground and agree that it should be moved one field to west. (4)
Roman Building (R) (site of) (NAT) (5)
The farmer, Mr J H Stobo, indicated that he suspected the site of the villa to be at SP 37881648 where he always hits stone when ploughing. This area, at present under plough, was investigated and it seems likely that the stone encountered by Mr Stobo is natural outcrop. The site indicated at SP 37911632 (authority 2) lies in permanent pasture and no indiction of former occupation was seen. The correct site seems almost certainly to be that seen on Allen's air photo, at SP 37961663 but is now under crop, and could not be investigated. The siting at SP 330166 is an approximation, and obviously intended to be at SP 37961663. No authority was found for the published site (Authorities 1 and 5). (6)
SP 380167. Roman rectangular enclosure at Oaklands Farm, scheduled. (7)
A thin scatter of Roman pottery was found during a field survey, 1981-2, near the site of Roman buildings at Oaklands Farm. The site was located on top of a ridge above the river Evenlode to the south of the modern farm, at SP 382167. Most of the pottery would appear to be of 1st to 2nd century date, and a small farmstead, not a villa is indicated. (8)
OX 23 Listed as the site of a possible Roman villa. (9)
An irregular, but broadly subrectangular, enclosure was recorded as cropmarks a short distance to the northeast of the villa site on Historic England oblique reconnaissance photographs taken 4th July 2018. It appears to lie partially outside the scheduled area, so is presumably not to be identified with any of the features described above. (10)
