II Manor House

*C.15. Mediaeval hall type house built circa 1450 by John
Hastings. Timber frame, lath and plaster partly rough cast.
Stone slate roof. Two gables either side with a gabled oriel and
a two-storey gabled bay in between. First floor overhangs. Wood
mullion windows. Interior has flat arched wood doorway with
carved spandrils, panelling, and Jacobean overmantel with arms
of Hastings. (2)

Yelford Manor. Manor house, now house. Late C15 for the Hastings
family; early C17 and C18 alterations. Timber-framed, of close
studding; clad in C18 limestone rubble on right side and to near
right. It probably had a 2-storey hall; the hall and side wings are
not linked structurally and appear to have been built in stages.
Listed grade II* ; see schedule for details. (3)

The best, and certainly the most picturesque, large timber-framed
house in the county. The cruck construction is visible internally,
as is part of the original roof - with arch-braced tie-beams.
Other details are given. (4)

Manor House, Yelford. Built 1540. (5)

SP 3595 0480 Yelford Manor. A measured survey of the timber-framed
house was carried out in Spring 1984. It stands on a moated site
within the earthworks of the shrunken medieval village of Yelford.
The building consists of a central hall with cross-wings to north and
south, probably built in the late C15 / early C16. Remains of an
earlier building were revealed beneath the hall in the 1950s.
Yelford Manor has been in the hands of only 2 families - the Hastings
of Dalesford until 1652 and the Lenthalls of Besselsleigh until
1949. (6)
