Summary : Almshouses founded in 1677 by Lady Katherine Leveson. Built by William Hurlbutt in the early 18th century with some rebuilding in 1725-6 by Smith of Warrick and in 1836. The near by Parish Church (see SP 27 NW 4) was at one time the Chapel for the Almshouse. Still in use. It is within the scheduled area of the Templars Preceptory (see SP 27 NW 10) but is excluded from the scheduling the ground beneath is however included. The almshouse is listed grade II*, the entrance gateway and side walls are listed grade II. The wrought iron gates are moders following an early pattern.

The Hospital or Almshouses for old women founded by Lady Katherine
Leveson in 1677 stands east of Balsall Church. "It is a plain
structure of sandstone and consists of two long ranges flanging a long narrow courtyard running north and south, with cross wings at their south ends. A wall between these wings contains the gateway to the courtyard. The north end is closed by the residence of the Master, which is also the vicarage: this was rebuilt in 1836". (2)

Building in good condition. See photograph.
Still in use as an almshouse and named "Lady Katherine Leveson's
Hospital". (3)

The building is in good condition and is still in use as almshouses
known as "The Hospital of the Lady Katherine Leveson". See photograph. (4)

Founded 1677, built by William Hurlbutt in early C18. Hospital
incorporated 1704. 27 residents by 1721. Narrow courtyard flanked
by 2 long ranges in red brick dressed with sandstone. Hipped old
tiled roofs. Shorter cross wings at south-east end. 2 storeys,
with attics to cross wings. 1st floor bands. 2 light stone mullion
and stone mullion and transom casement windows with glazing bars,
flush set in plain surrounds. Central facing pediments with round
panels in tympana. Gabled north-west cross wings. Some rebuilding,
1725-6, by Smith of Warrick.

Early C18 red brick flanking walls to ashlar piers with entablatures,
blocking courses, urns with gadrooning. Plain wrought iron modern
gates following early pattern.

Church of Saint Mary, Templars Hall, North East Range, South West
Range, Entrance Gateway and side Walls at the Lady Katherine Leveson
Hospital, Vicarage and Temple House form a group. (5)
