More information : West Gate and St. James's Chapel, Grade I. Late 14th century, perhaps incorporating earlier structure and on the site of a gate extant from at least 1129. Extended west tower added early 15th century. A part of the medieval town defences. Ground floor has pointed arches either end of ribbed vault. First floor chapel extensively restored 1663-5 by G G Scott who redesigned the windows, rebuilt parapet walks,added flying buttresses and refurnished the interior. (1-2) Additional bibliography. (3)
Leland notes that there was a little college of 4 priests over the gatehouse, but this seems to have been a chantry rather than a college, and was dependent on St Mary's, Warwick. (4) |
