More information : (SS 46371954) St Mary & St Gregory's Church (CofE) (NAT) (1) CIVIL PARISH OF FRITHELSTOCK A Parish Church of St. Mary and St. Gregory C.15 tall tapering tower of considerable beauty on west end, with diagonal buttresses at foot, and embattlements and pinnacles. South aisle of 3 bays with sumptuous piers with canopied niches for images. C. 14 East windows. Ceiled wagon roofs throughout. Inside are excellent benches of C.15 and C.16, Jacobean pulpit, plaster Royal Arms of 1677, and Norman font. (2)
Church of St Mary and St Gregory. C13th North wall; chancel rebuilt and South aisle early C14th. South-East chapel of ca.1500, West tower rebuilt in the C15th. Norman origins are indicated by a reset C12th stoup adjoining to the inner door. The font is a C13th, quatrefoil-shaped. Grade I. (3,4)
The Exeter Disceson Architectual Society in 1848 described the font as being "Norman, 4 feet square basin; singular circular shaft with chevron". It seems that the font therefore was reshaped after 1848, the bowl originally being of the Hittesleigh type, mid-C12th. (5) |
