DESCRIPTION

Iron Age hillfort encompassing 11 acres. Dated to the 1st-2nd century BC, excavation in 1959 reveled traces of timber revetments to the ramparts. There is a possible entrance on the east side but a causeway to the south east is post 1660. Part of the ramparts have been damaged by ploughing and covered by overburden from an adjacent quarry.

[SP 09537790] Berry Mound [N.A.T.] Camp [N.R.] (1)

Danes Camp, Danes Bank or Bury Fields (2). Berry Mound. A hill
fort of 11 acres, dated to the 2nd - 1st century B.C. Sectioned
on the north and south-east sides by Birmingham Arch. Soc. in
1959. The north rampart was 24 ft. wide with traces of timber
revetment and had an outer V-shaped ditch (once re-cut), 15ft.
wide and 6ft. deep. The rampart on the south-east was of similar
construction but the ditch was 22ft. wide and 7ft. deep. The
causeway on the south-east is post 1660.(4).
The breaks in the south side are probably modern; an apparently
in-turned entrance may have existed in the east side, facing the
gravel pit. (5). (2-5)

The earthwork is strongest to the south; in the west the rampart
has been partly absorbed by a hedgerow and to the north-east it
has been damaged by ploughing. The outer bank of the ditch on
the east is being obscured by overburden from the adjacent quarry.
Resurveyed at 1/2500. (6)

No change since report of 1.5.68. Published survey (1:2500 and
1:1250) correct. (7)
