Willoughton, founded during the reign of Stephen, was the richest of the English houses of the Templars. After the suppression of the order in 1312 the house passed to the Hospitallers. It was dissolved in 1540. The preceptory stood on Temple Garth. In the fields adjoining are remains of moats, perhaps of the preceptory. A large proportion of the perimeter moat and extensive internal earthworks remain of this site. The farmhouse and outbuildings on Temple Garth display no evidence of antiquity.

Willoughton, founded during the reign of Stephen, was the richest of
the English houses of the Templars. After the suppression of the
order in 1312 the house passed to the Hospitallers. It was dissolved
in 1540. The preceptory stood on Temple Garth. In the fields
adjoining are remains of moats, perhaps of the preceptory. (2-4)

A large proportion of the perimeter moat and extensive internal
earthworks remain of this site. The farmhouse and outbuildings
on Temple Garth display no evidence of antiquity. Surveyed at 1:2500. (5)

SK 9277 9314. Site of medieval preceptory and settlement remains,
Temple Garth. Scheduled RSM no. 22612. (6)

The earthworks of the Medieval preceptory, described by the
previous authorities, were surveyed on the ground and mapped from
good quality air photographs by the RCHME. The precinct moat,
centred at SK 9276 9325, forms an enclosure 210m by 215m. The
foundations of at least two buildings were identified within the
precinct. A large enclosure, 155m by 125m, centred at SK 9284 9307,
is also possibly part of the preceptory complex.

Adjoining the moat to the south (SK 9267 9302) and east (SK 9292
9320) is a group of ditched and embanked enclosures, interpreted as
crofts/tofts or gardens/orchards, with settlement of the 16th
century or earlier. Several ponds/pits are identified within the
enclosures, in particular a large one at SK 9274 9301, was possibly
used for clay extraction. A hollow way, 120m in length, was
identified at SK 9280 9298.
