Summary : The buried remians of the church at the medieval village of Thorpe, first documented in the mid-12th century. The church was demolished early in the 17th century and a war memorial near the centre of the settlement now marks the site where it stood. Located within a raised rectangular enclosure measuring about 50 metres by 30 metres and representing the churchyard, the remains of the church survive as buried building foundations. Scheduled. |
More information : Thorpe in the Fallows had a church which went into decay after the Reformation. A war memorial now stands on the site. (1-2) The fenced-in war memorial, at SK 9122 8072 carries the inscription, "the church of St. Mary Magdelen formerly stood here. After 1568 the vicarage was united with the Rectory of Aisthorpe". Within the enclosure are several small architectural remains of the church. Grassed-over building foundations are plainly visible, as is the churchyard boundary. The corners of the latter are also marked by large stones, presumably to prevent accidental agricultural disturbance. Remains surveyed at 1/2500. Further slight earthworks in this area indicate some contraction of Thorpe village. (3)
