More information : [SK 9704 6943] St. Catherine's Priory [AT] (Site of) [TI] (1) St. Catherine's Gilbertine priory on the S.W. side of Barr Gate, Lincoln, was founded probably soon after 1148, and suppressed 1538. The building of the priory (and St. Sepulchre's Hospital) occupied the area between Sincil Dyke to the north, the Witham to the west, and the highway to the east, and they reached south-wards to a point some way beyond the foot of Cross Cliff Hill. (2-5) The site of this priory is built over. (6)
The Gilbertine Priory of St Katherine’s without Bargate was founded in 1148 by Robert de Chesney, fourth Bishop of Lincoln. Many documents and maps relating to the medieval priory refer to St Katherine’s Priory. The priory was named after St Katherine of Alexandria, patron saint of learning, who was tortured on a wheel and subsequently had a firework named after her. (7) |
