Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 325739

Hob Uid: 325739
Location :
Lincolnshire
South Kesteven
Little Ponton and Stroxton
Grid Ref : SK9223032600
Summary : Probable mound of unknown date seen as earthworks. Also thought alternatively thought to be a Bronze Age round barrow or a mound of material excavated from a gravel pit.
More information : [SK 9223 3260] Tumulus [OE]. (1)

Round barrow, 47 paces across, 7 ft high, no ditch. Undisturbed. (2)

Thought by Mr Preston of Grantham to be merely material excavated
from the gravel pit to the NW, but this is by no means certain. (3)

Scheduled round barrow. (4)

The mound, as described by Auth 2, stands in sandy soil on a position
of some prominence. Certain classification is impossible without
excavation. Published survey (25" 1931) correct. (5)

The mound referred to by the previous authorities was seen as
earthworks and mapped from poor quality air photographs. It is 40m
in diameter and is located as stated by the previous authority.
There are eight possible Bronze Age barrows within a one kilometer
radius and the mound could be related to these (see SK 93 SW 33-36).
(Morph No. LI.735.7.1)

This description is based on data from the RCHME MORPH2 database.
