Summary : Alleged site of the Civil War battle of 15th May 1643 between the Royalists, led by Charles Cavendish, and the Parliamentarians under Cromwell. The site is alleged to have been in Belton Park on the the level space between the stream which feeds the fishponds and Belton Park gates.
More information : The suggested site of the encounter near Belton on
May 15, 1643, between the Royalists under the Hon. Charles
Cavendish and the Parliamentarians under Cromwell, is the level
space between the stream that feeds the modern fishponds, and
Belton park gates. There is more than half a mile between these
two points and the area extends inwards for considerably more.
To the north-west was a hamlet called Tolthorp [see SK 93 NW 1
for Towthorpe D.M.V.] Skeletons have been found near. Belton
Parish register records the burial of three men slain in Belton
Fight, May 13, 1643. The Parliamentarians, although outnumbered,
were victorious. (1)
