DESCRIPTION

The site of a possible Roman villa recorded by William Stukeley in his diaries in 1739 and 1740. He located the villa near the `fine and remarkable spring' at Stoke [Stoke Rochford or South Stoke]. The location is thought to be close to the springhead in Stoke Rochford Park. Foundations, bricks, mosaics and coins are reported to have been found. Field investigations in 1965 did not locate any traces of this feature.

[Area SK 918276] (2) Entries in Stukeley's diaries, dated 1739 and 1740, refer to the site of a Roman villa, near the 'fine and remarkable spring' at Stoke (editorial note - 'Stoke Rochford'
or 'South Stoke'). Foundations, brick, mosaics and coins have been found there. (1)
There is now no sign of the villa which was probably near the spring head (2) [SK 91722755]. (1-2)
