More information : (SK 965122) Hardwick Village (Site of). (1) In 1445 the hamlet of Hardwick (at one time of importance) was said to be devastated and uninhabited. It lies to the north of Ermine Street and now only comprises a wood, farm and cottages. (2) The manor or hamlet of Hardwick is wholly contained in Empingham parish. In about the late 11th cent William Peverel was first connected with it and it became the See of Peverel. Later on it was held by the Waleys or Walsche family along with Peverel in Empingham, until about 1235, when it was exchanged for certain lands by William le Waleys to Sir Thomas de Normanvill. The village was waste and destroyed in about 1383, when Sir John de Basynges died. (3) Listed by M Beresford with reference to (3); sited at SK 971124. (4) No remains.
