More information : A Roman building was discovered during deep ploughing in a field called The Poodles, Castle Bytham. A pavement of red and yellow tesserae, flue and roof tiles and shingles, a fragment of coloured wall plaster, and a small amount of Roman pottery was found. The site is on high ground near a stream that is a tributary of the River Glen. (1) Information was obtained from Mr. Crawford, Castle Farm, whose father (now deceased) made the original finds c. 1938. They comprised those listed above (samples of which are in Grantham Museum) also patches of iron slag and four illegible Roman coins, retained by Mr. Crawford. He indicated an approximate siting at SK 9925 1828, a field once known locally as the "Poodles" now under crop. (2)
An examination of all available photography revealed no evidence of the Roman building described by authority 1. (3) |
