Monument Number 325182

Hob Uid: 325182
Location :
Rutland
Empingham
Grid Ref : SK9409008110
Summary : Excavations uncovered a Roman building, possibly a courtyard villa with a hypocaust. Late 2nd/early 3rd century pottery was found. It may be the main dwelling to the farm complex (SK 90 NW 12) uncovered to the south. Iron Age features and pottery were uncovered in adjacent fields.
More information : A Ro house (poss. a courtyard villa) is in the process of excavation at SK 94090811. Eight rooms have been uncovered. Pottery found is hybrid L2C/E 3c and about 60 coins have so far been recovered but not yet classified. An interim report is not to be published as excavations are to continue in 1972. (1)

Excavations site surveyed at 1:2500. In conversation Mr Gorrins suggested the house as being the main building of the nearby farm complex (SK 90 NW 12). (2)

Dwelling of tripartite plan, seemingly the "farm-house" connected with farm buildings to the south of the River (SK 90 NW 12). Quantities of painted plaster and a hypocaust system point to its quality. Recent work in adjacent fields has disturbed several Iron Age features and associated pottery. (3)

LE 30 Listed as the site of a Roman villa. (4)
