Marton Roman Fort

Hob Uid: 324978
Location :
Lincolnshire
West Lindsey
Marton
Grid Ref : SK8319082070
Summary : The site of a probable Roman fort seen as cropmarks. It was considered that a Roman Fort originally stood on the site of the Littleborough Roman Settlement, aerial reconnaissance has, however, shown that the fort lies on the opposite (eastern) bank of the River Trent where Stukeley noted an earthwork. The fort is visible on three sides only, and is defined by a double ditch; it has approximate internal measurements of 90 metres by 75 metres. The west side of the fort (not visible) lies on a scarp, so that the fort lies above the flood plain of the River Trent, to the west. There are breaks in the double ditches on the north, south, and east sides indicating the probable position of entrances, but are not clearly defined in each case.
More information : SK 833821. A Roman Fort at Marton. (1)

It was considered that a Roman Fort originally stood on the site of the Littleborough Roman Settlement (SK 88 SW 1) Recent aerial reconnaissance has, however, shown that the fort lies on the opposite (eastern) bank (of the R. Trent) where Stukeley noted an earthwork. Nothing to be seen on RAF or OS APs. (2)

The Roman fort recorded by Authorities 1-2 was seen as a cropmark and mapped from good quality air photographs; it is more accurately located at SK 8319 8207. The fort is visible on three sides only, and is defined by a double ditch; it has approximate internal measurements of 90m by 75m. The west side of the fort (not visible) lies on a scarp, so that the fort lies above the flood plain of the River Trent, to the west. There are breaks in the double ditches on the N, S, and E sides indicating the probable position of entrances, but not clearly defined in each case. (Morph No. LI.671.1.1)
