Marton Roman Fort |
Hob Uid: 324978 | |
Location : Lincolnshire West Lindsey Marton
|
Grid Ref : SK8319082070 |
Summary : The site of a probable Roman fort seen as cropmarks. It was considered that a Roman Fort originally stood on the site of the Littleborough Roman Settlement, aerial reconnaissance has, however, shown that the fort lies on the opposite (eastern) bank of the River Trent where Stukeley noted an earthwork. The fort is visible on three sides only, and is defined by a double ditch; it has approximate internal measurements of 90 metres by 75 metres. The west side of the fort (not visible) lies on a scarp, so that the fort lies above the flood plain of the River Trent, to the west. There are breaks in the double ditches on the north, south, and east sides indicating the probable position of entrances, but are not clearly defined in each case. |
