Broadholme Priory

Hob Uid: 324741
Location :
Lincolnshire
West Lindsey
Broadholme
Grid Ref : SK8950073530
Summary : Premonstratensian nunnery founded before 1154 dissolved 1536. Potential Medieval or Post Medieval hollow way and enclosures, possibly associated with the priory, seen as earthworks.
More information : Broadholme. Priory of Premonstratensian Canonesses. Founded before 1154. Dissolved 1536. (1)

[SK 8950 7353]
The only existing remains of Broadholme Priory are built into the walls of the present Manor Farm.

The chapel site is at the back of the house; the cemetery seems to have been to the east where the orchard is now. The field in which the present house stands has many traces of fish-ponds. (2)

Manor Farm shows no structural evidence of an early building. Two irregular ponds to the south were filled in about 10 years ago; there is no other suggestion of earthworks. (3)

A Potential Medieval hollow way and enclosures, possibly associated with the priory referred to by the previous authorities, were seen as earthworks and mapped from good quality air photographs. The hollow way is 100m long and is centred at SK 8940 7334. It appears to link up to tracks still in use today. Two conjoined ditched enclosures, and the possible parts of more conjoined enclosures, are visible to the south east of Manor Farm. The enclosures measure 90m by 55m and 40m by 20m and are centred at SK 8957 7345 and SK 8950 7341 respectively. Adjacent are three large cut features, of unknown function. The association of these earthworks with the priory is not clear from air photographs alone and the features could even relate to Post Medieval activity on the site. (Morph No. LI.677.4.1-6)

This description is based on data from the RCHME MORPH2 database. (4)
