Summary : Site of manor house with chapel, Laneham Manor. It is recorded that Archbishop Corbridge died in the manor house in 1304. There are no traces of the manor house or chapel. |
More information : At Laneham a manor house belonging to the Archbishop of York and containing a chapel is listed under "vanished churches of which the sites are known". (1) It is recorded that Archbishop Corbridge died in this house on 22nd September 1304. (2) What could be the remains of a moat are shown on OS 1:2500 1885, but is now a pond at SK 80127630 on OS 6" 1956 - see illust copy of old map. (3) Local enquiries at Church Laneham were negative regarding the site of the former manor house. There is no mention in the parish church of any local possessions of the See of York and inspection of maps held by the County Record Office was also fruitless. The suggested "moat" remains have been ploughed out and are now under crop; this field was deep ploughed last winter (1972/73) for the first time, the farmer states that no foundations were encountered and no archaeological finds were made. Mr B A Minnitt (a local historian of note) has done some private research but has uncovered nothing of interest and is inclined to think that the original source is dubious. (4)
