Summary : A parish church built in 1799 and a chancel added in 1869. An earlier medieval church had previously stood in front of the portico of the present Hall at Stubton. This small church is believed to have resembled that at Claypole, which is of decorated and perpendicular style, and so probably dated to the early fourteenth century at the latest. The repair of the church was so poor by the end of the 18th century that it was pulled down and the present church was built. The present church is Gothic revival in style, and built in ashlar and blue lias with a slate roof. The work of 1799 includes the nave, western rectangular vestry and western tower to the east of the vestry. |
More information : [SK 87474877] Church [T.U.] (1) St. Martins originally stood immediately in front of the portico of the present Hall at Stubton. It was a small church said to resemble that of Claypole (which was Decorated to Perpendicular), in such bad state of repair that it was pulled down by Sir Robert Heron, who built the present church on a new site, in 1800. A chancel was added in 1869. (2-4) The site locally recognised as that of the earlier church is at SK 87564907, although there is now no surface evidence. The modern church is in normal use. (5)
