More information : (SK 88581644) St Peter and St Paul's Church (NAT) (1) Almost a wholly decorated church with an Anglo-Saxon tower arch. (2) Church tower "rebuilt and remodelled in thirteenth and fourteenth centuries on Saxon foundations. Three elaborate, ornamented, Saxon stones built in N, W and S walls. Three loose stones similar to the celebrated Deerhurst decorated opening, lying against tower. Two bulging balusters, probably from former belfry openings, used as gate posts. Tower arch fine, tall, narrow, with vous-soired head and upright and flat jambs. (3) A Saxon carved stone is built horizontally into the first limestone course above the ironstone plinth of the tower on both the south and west sides, and the rector said two more are in the north side but are at present obscured by a wooden hut. He knows nothing of the loose stones referred to by authy 3 and they could not be seen either in the church or the yard. (a) The 'bulging balusters' are built into a stile at the NW corner of the grave-yard, SK 88551647. See photographs. (4)
