Summary : There is evidence from the fabric of the church that it had Saxon origins, and evidence from Domesday Book that it was formerly a Saxon minster. Domesday records that the church held seven berewicks, probably Ayston, Belton, Leighfield, Preston, Uppingham, Wardley and Wing. Two priests and 3 churches are recorded in Ridlington in 1086. There is strong evidence that Wardley was the location of one of these churches, and that Uppingham may have been the other. The chancel and South arcade are 1200-1250, although the chancel was rebuilt in the 14th century. The West tower and clerestory are 15th century. There is a fine 12th century tympanum. General resoration in 1860, especially the chancel and aisles. |
