More information : Area SK 798982. Possible site of monastic grange. "The monks of the Priory of Thornholme ... Built a convenient house on a holme or small island between Owston and Gulnethorpe ... the subteraneous forest skirts this little oasis on all sides, but ... no trees are found on the hill. The ruins of this monastic establishment were removed some few years since. They were of considerable extent, and the floors had been curiously inlaid with bricks "(a). The present Thurnholmes Farm at SK 798982 lies at the north end of a small island of Keuper Marl and sand which rises above the surrounding levels. (1)
There were no traces of the Medieval monastic grange, referred to by the previous authority, in the vicinity of SK 79 98, on the available air photographs. (2) |
