Grid Ref : SS2315026220
Summary : Loopholed wall, a courtyard wall of Blegberry farmhouse with two or three civil war musket loopholes cut into the fabric of the wall.
More information : (SS 23152622) Blegberry (NAT). (1)

At Blegberry there are remains of fortifications of the Civil War
period. (2)

Blegberry farmhouse contains a plaster overmantel with armorial
bearings dated 1627. (3)

Blegberry farmhouse is largely rebuilt but on a chimney stack is
a date stone of 1634. The stone built house with restored slate
roof stands on two sides of a courtyard, the other sides being
enclosed by a very well preserved fortified wall with stone
capping and several slits for defenders to fire through. A small
stone built gabled well-head has a datestone of 1657 (SS 22 NW 5)
Blegberry has been separately listed as of architectural and
historical worth. Grade 2. (4)

Blegberry farmhouse (name confirmed) is stone built and of two
storeys with a slate roof. Externally the building bears no
distinctive evidence of its date other than the typical 17th
century type chimney stacks.

The Civil War fortification consists of a wall 3.0 m high along
the west and south sides of the house. It is 0.6 m thick and
incorporates two or three musket loops. There is no evidence of
fortification on the eastern or landward side of the house but
this area is occupied by barns and modern buildings.

Walling has been delineated on 1:2500 plan and antiquity model. (5)

The Courtyard Wall immediately West of Blegberry Farmhouse and extending approximately 50.0m to the South is listed Grade II*, while the rest of the farmhouse is listed Grade II. (6)
