Summary : During restoration work, in July 1961, at All Saints church, Asfordby, a fragment of a 10th or early 11th c pre-conquest cross shaft that had been built into the North aisle of the West end was removed. Its removal revealed two further sides with their carving in good condition but the fourth side was defaced. Three fragments are displayed in the church. |
More information : During restoration work, in July 1961, at All Saints church, Asfordby (SK 7080 1895), a fragment of a 10th or early 11th c pre-conquest cross shaft that had been built into the N aisle of the W end was removed. Its removal revealed two further sides with their carving in good condition but the fourth side was defaced. See illus. the remains were set up in the church. (1) Three fragments of this cross shaft are now preserved within the church. (2)
