More information : [SK 7735 1545] The Grange [G.T.] (Site of) [T.I.] (1) A terraced plateau marks the site of the Grange. Scheduled ancient momument. (2,3) A moated island with associated watercourse and ditches. (4) Since the site was last reported on and surveyed in 1963 the field in which it is located has been ploughed, destroying the E-W bank at the northern extremity. An annexe in the form of a heavy scatter of undressed stones can now be seen extending westwards some 120 m. from the N & S arms of the moat. This probably marks the extent of the grange farm buildings. (5)
SK 7734 1546. Moated grange. This rectangular moat has an additional ditch projecting to the north from the north-east corner. The moat ditches are 8.0m - 10.0m wide and 1.5 - 2.0m deep. The overall dimensions of the moated area are 75m N-S x 60m E-W. The northward ditch extension is also 8.0m - 10.0m wide and it extends 90m, bending slightly towards the river. Running the length of the eastern side of the site, including the northern arm, are the slight remains of an outer bank. The moat island is slightly raised on the north-east side with a low mound in the opposite corner. Several gifts of land in Burton Lazars, including this grange, were given to Vaudey Abbey in Lincolnshire by Richard I, as documented in 1189. Historical sources refer to a stone tower within the grange. Scheduled (RSM) No. 17028. (6) |
