(2) This cross consists of a square tapering shaft about 3.5 metres in height set up in a small modern socket stone on the ancient socket stone, the whole on a modern square base. See GP/53/126/1. SK 7191 0281. Market cross on west side of Market Place. The cross consists of a modern plinth on which rests the original medieval socket stone which is surmounted by a modern cube-like socket stone. Set into the centre of this modern socket is the medieval shaft with a tapering square section and roll mouldings at each angle. The fleur-de-lys head of the cross is thought to be 19th century. The cross is probably 13th or 14th century in origin and is believed to stand in or near its original position. Scheduled (RSM) No. 21649. (6) |
