Near Austerfield is 'a large square fortification, perhaps a Roman
camp, with the remains of a military way.' (2)

The site of the Roman camp at Austerfield is 'part of Austerfield
high common and Finningley Park'.
At the time of the inclosure 'parts of swords and heads of batleaxes'
were found near the site of the camp, and a brass key and spearhead
were found in the middle lawn. (3)

'A portion of the south ditch, with the low embankment along it, is
the only part of this camp remaining. Some years ago a Roman
spearhead and other curiosities were found.' (4)

Roman camp. (7)

Austerfield: "I am informed by L. Spilsbury, of Bawtry, Esq., that he
remembers, about fifty years ago, seeing the [Roman] camp named by
Pryme; it was situated on the left side of the road to Finningley,
betwixt Partridge Hill and the Park, and that the breastwork was
upwards of yard high, but since the inclosure quite obliterated. Many
Roman coins and military weapons have since been discovered."

[See: A.O. Archive No. 2145 for map showing site.] (8)

The site of this camp, and the surrounding area, has undergone
extensive surface quarrying, to an average depth of 4 to 6 m.
No further information was obtained from local enquiries. (9)
