More information : [SK 6552 9776] Roman Camp [G.S.] (Site of) [Not published on current 6"] (1) Near Austerfield is 'a large square fortification, perhaps a Roman camp, with the remains of a military way.' (2) The site of the Roman camp at Austerfield is 'part of Austerfield high common and Finningley Park'. At the time of the inclosure 'parts of swords and heads of batleaxes' were found near the site of the camp, and a brass key and spearhead were found in the middle lawn. (3) 'A portion of the south ditch, with the low embankment along it, is the only part of this camp remaining. Some years ago a Roman spearhead and other curiosities were found.' (4) Nothing whatever visible. (5) Roman fort, 20.11.1699. (6) Roman camp. (7) Austerfield: "I am informed by L. Spilsbury, of Bawtry, Esq., that he remembers, about fifty years ago, seeing the [Roman] camp named by Pryme; it was situated on the left side of the road to Finningley, betwixt Partridge Hill and the Park, and that the breastwork was upwards of yard high, but since the inclosure quite obliterated. Many Roman coins and military weapons have since been discovered." [See: A.O.
