Monument Number 319517

Hob Uid: 319517
Location :
Nottinghamshire
Rushcliffe
Kinoulton
Grid Ref : SK6736029320
Summary : Medieval moat, with a central depression. Excavations in 1970 revealed wall footings and pitched stone. fFshponds, a hollow way, ridge and furrow and a post-mill mound also visible as earthworks
More information : (SK 67362932) Moat. (1)

A homestead moat. (2)

The moated area carries a central depression, and not an earth
platform as would be expected. Excavations appear to be in progress
on the northern edge of the central reservation. (3)

Contrary to the interpretation of the APs the central platform has no
depression. The excavation was carried out by farm workers with a
mechanical digger and apparently substantial brick foundations were
encountered.

However surface debris contains no traces of brick, only undressed
boulders tile and slate. See 25" annotated survey. (4)

No change. (5)

SK 674293. Moat, south of Kinoulton village. (6)

A small-scale excavation in 1970 revealed low wall footings and an
area of pitched stone, along with some late medieval pottery. Aerial
photography shows surrounding ridge and furrow and other minor
features. (7)

SK 6738 2935. Moat, fishpond, enclosures, hollow way and post-mill
mound 600m NW of Barland Fields. Scheduled RSM no. 23210. (8)
