A Roman milestone, bearing the inscription of the Emperor Hadrian
dated to the years AD 120-1 and terminating in the distance figure
'A RATIS II', was found in 1771 on the Fosse Way at Thurmaston.
The stone was found "while digging to make the turnpike in
Thurmaston Lane; on the right hand side from Leicester, about
230 yards beyond the bridge". As the stone was found 3 ft below
the surface and at the foot of a "heap of Charley or Charnwood
Stones set in lime" (perhaps its original base) it could be in
situ, but as the distance from its site to Leicester is 410 yds
in excess of 2 miles this makes it unlikely as the Roman
measurement was accurate, also the shortness of the column
(3 1/2 ft) rather suggests that the base had been sawn off before
its discovery in 1771. (2)
