More information : MOAT [G.T.] (Track of) (1) Moat: The material obtained during the cutting of the deep surrounding ditch of the main Inner Ward, was thrown outwards to form a large counterscarp bank. The present causeway across the ditch occupies the site of an earlier drawbridge. (2) The moat, which has at one time surrounded the castle, is now dry and is heavily overgrown on the North and East sides by trees and shrubs. There is much masonry in the bottom of the ditch which has probably fallen down from the castle wall. The moat is at present divided into 3 portions viz. A-B, C-D, D -E. At B and C the portions of the moat overlap forming a kind of tongue of land between. At D the modern causeway over the moat appears, while the portion A-E is a raised plateau above the moat. The moat is approx. 2.5 m-3.0 m deep below the exterior ground level. GP/53/19/4/5 (3) The description by Authy. 3 is correct. It is understood that the M.O.W. plan a clearance of the moat in the near future. (4) Conditon unchanged. No clearance of the moat has yet taken place. (5)
