Summary : Alleged site of a Roman villa, the evidence for which is unclear; possibly based on a 19th century record of a tesselated pavement and stone axe-head. |
More information : [SK 5155 8810 Centre of area] Roman villa? (1)
Unless there is evidence of a Roman villa to be found on an air-photograph there is little likelihood of finding it by field investigation. The area delineated includes a very deep-stone quarry, a field full of old workings and fields under pasture. No crop-marks were seen or finds made. (2)
Local enquiries have not revealed any knowledge of any Roman finds or of the site of a Roman villa in the area indicated by Mr. Copley. He is now deceased and there does not appear to be any way of discovering why he should make the above note. Field perambulation confirms auth 2. (3)
"In the centre of the village [of Laughton-en-le-Morthen] are remains of the outer walls and gateway of the very ancient building still called the Old Hall [SK 58 NW 4]. A gentleman told me that some time ago he found underneath the rubbish a stone instrument representing an axe-head; and although he had not seen them, he said parts of a tesselated pavement had been discovered on the same site. (4)
Described as a doubtful site. Reference is made to Auth.4. (5)
No further information. (6)
It appears no evidences of the Roman Villa could be found on air photographs. (7)
