More information : (SK 59366662) Cross on site of St Edwin's Chapel (NR) (1) Site of the chantry and hermitage of St Edwin was identified in 1911 by the Vicar of Edwinstowe and W Stevenson. A cairn of some of the original building blocks was made and surmounted by a metal cross. The earliest record is from 1201 when King John paid the hermit of Clipstone a stipend of 40 shillings for his services, payments by succeeding Kings are recorded to 1548. The chapel is shown on maps of 1610 and 1630. (2) Remains as described above. See photo. Published survey (1:2500 1960) correct. Of the sub-trapezoidal enclosure cropmark (a) surrounding the site, nothing is visible on the ground. (3)
The map of 1609 (original Notts CRO MP/WP 5 S), which depicts the chapel, shows it to lie close to a dog-leg in the boundary of the surrounding enclosure, which may equate to a kink that still exists some 30m NW of the supposed site. There are no building remains visible at this location, however. (4)
