More information : The site of a possible 14th century fortified homestead lies in the field north of Bilborough Church (SK 52004180). Excavations by H Martin and A Oswald, in 1939, revealed a rectangular banked enclosure with a rectangular earthwork in its north east corner (see plan), which carried remains of limestone walling, and a layer of burnt material suggesting a wooden or thatched roof. The south east corner of the enclosure has been destroyed by a modern road, 14th/15th. century occupation was suggested by the pottery found. (1) East side and north east corner of enclosure visible on APs, at SK 52004188. (2) Romano-British pottery also found on the site. (3)
