Summary : Earthworks of a pond bay and a probable moat were located in two fields known as the `Granges' at Costock. The eastern side of the possible moat, appears to be only the course of an old stream meander. Field investigations in 1975 found the area under a much disturbed short pasture in which early plough, fields, field roads, a pond-bay and water courses were all evident. No archaeological features of note were now seen. The field name suggests that this may have been the site of a Grange of Garendon Abbey but no substantiating evidence was found. |
