More information : (SK 5861 1264) Cross (GT) (Remains of) (1) Rothley cross-shaft is socketed into a large base-stone, the joint being made with lead. The shaft is composed of two stones of coarse millstone grit. The lower stone is 10ft 5 ins in height, and the upper stone is 2ft in height. The Ringerike ornament dates the cross to the first half of the 11th century. (2-3) Rothley pre-Conquest cross is as described. For general appearance and condition see GP/53/113/1. (4) No change. SK 5861 1263. Mercian cross, St Mary and St John's churchyard. The cross is late 8th or 9th century with modern repairs and was originally a monolith, but has been broken into four stones at some date and subsequently reassembled. It stands on an earthen mound 3.9m diameter and 0.6m high at centre, within which the socket stone is partly buried. Each face of the shaft is divided by doubled mouldings into four ornamental panels with elaborate low relief carved decoration. The cross is considered to stand in its original location.
