Monument Number 316942

Hob Uid: 316942
Location :
Leicestershire
Blaby
Enderby
Grid Ref : SK5505000210
Summary : Excavation of an enclosed Iron Age occupation site; Neolithic polished stone axe found.
More information : Crop marks of a sub-circular enclosure are visible on
St Joseph AP's at Enderby (SK 5505 0021). (1)

Indicated site under plough; no surface evidence of enclosure and no
surface finds made during perambulation. (2)

Excavation of sub-circular AP enclosure in 1983 showed a three phase
Iron Age occupation site. The first phase was a small unenclosed
settlement including one or two round houses. This was subsequently
enclosed by a rectangular ditch. This ditch was later replaced by a
larger sub-circular enclosure c.1 hectare in area. A few flint
artifacts and a polished stone axe suggests some early Neolithic
activity. Hearth debris and slag were noted inside the enclosed
area along with Iron Age pottery. (3)

The site was fieldwalked in 1982 and Bronze Age and Saxon pottery
were found along with a pottery spindle whorl. (4)
