Summary : The Cundy House was constructed in the early 17th century, probably some time before 1617, to provide the water supply for Bolsover Castle, 300 metres away. It was built in the line of the natural spring and originally housed a lead water tank. From the Cundy House, water was delivered to the cistern house via a water pipe using the siphon effect. It was then pumped to a higher level and was delivered to a fountain in the castle garden. The lead water tank was replaced in 1885 with a brick-built one and it continued to supply the castle until the 1920s. The Cundy House was restored in 2003, at which time the solid stone-vaulted roof was rebuilt. |
